Sudha Shenoy (1943-2008)

I am saddened to learn of the death yesterday of Sudha Shenoy, an Indian-born (Austrian-school) economist, historian, and libertarian who taught for many years in Australia. Besides being a true scholar and champion of liberty, she was a wonderfully warm person, exceedingly knowledgeable and very funny. I met her only a few times, but occasionally corresponded with her. I and many other will miss her.

An obituary is here. And here is a wonderful video lecture of hers on free trade and globalization.

Sudha Shenoy's death comes as very sad news. I came to know her only in recent years, but I developed an instant respect and liking for her and her scholarship. She was a unique person in many ways, all of them admirable. Her knowledge of the facts of economic history and the history of economic thought, among other things, was nothing short of astounding, yet her deep understanding of Austrian economics allowed her to make sense of the surface complexity of the world without being swamped by it.

Also a kind, helpful, and courteous person, though a no-nonsense one in debate, she lived a life of serious scholarship and deep dedication to liberty that the rest of us might well envy. We are fortunate to have had her among us.
