News Corp. (Murdoch, WSJ, Fox) gave $1 million to the Republican Governors Association because the company "has always believed in the power of free markets and in organizations like the RGA, which have a pro-business agenda...."
Not only are those not the same things, they are in conflict with each other. You can have a pro-business agenda or a free market, but not both.

It would be one thing if the Republicans supported an actual minarchist policy. It would still be a problem, as the very existence of the state makes impartiality impossible, but at least it would be a defensible philosophical position. Instead the Republicans endorse a combination of sweet heart deals and regulation (which of course often amount to the same thing.)
ReplyDeletePerhaps the RGA's "pro-business agenda" will now be explicitly pro-News Corp. News Corp. is a business, isn't it? Like the Pope's a Catholic?
ReplyDeleteIt needn't be a contradiction. Maybe News Corp has always believed in the power of the free market to destroy the violent Intellectual Monopoly that they have used to accumulate their billions. And hence believes in pro-business organizations like the RGA, who will put a stop to this grave and gathering danger.
ReplyDeleteCharles, point taken.
