Obama: Enemy of the Working Class
Barack Obama, the current White House occupant, recently reaffirmed his support for employer-based health insurance. In my book that makes him the enemy of all working people. The tethering of employees to their bosses is a rotten leftover from World War II and should have been abolished long ago. Those who believe in freedom and independence must rediscover the mutual-aid movement of the not-too-distant past.
I can really appreciate your reference to the mutual aid societies, as I currently reading the book: "Mutual Aid to the Welfare State: Fraternal Societies and Social Services, 1890-1967" by David Beito. My liberal friends have never heard of mutual aid societies, and they are in disbelief when I tell them that many welfare functions, that are now provided by some governmental entity, were previously provided in this country by many different types of mutual aid societies. These mutual aid societies existed in abundance before our welfare state came into being. The book points out that poor people often belonged to several different mutual aid societies aim at different needs. Moreover, these mutual aid societies were usually also fraternal organizations, as well.
